PostHeaderIcon How do you get traffic to your blog?

Do you blog? Do you blog to advertise items you are selling? I am rather new to the blogging world. I mainly blog to advertise products that I am selling and websites that I am selling on. How do I get traffic to my blog? Do I basically just need to add content? Does my blog get picked up in the search? Any advice on blogging is very much needed.
Hello, yes I mention it on my twitter account and also my other web-sites.

You are right that you need to write content, but that is not enough. You also need to do some blog promotion to get some initial visitors. If I were you I would sign up for a twitter account and start using it to promote all new posts.

Commenting on other blogs is also a great way to get visitors, because blog comments normally have a back link to your site.

Use all the social media tools available to publicise your blog post - digit, delicious it, tweet it etc. Use facebook and linkedin and get them to show your blog posts by using the RSS feed from your bog.

If you don’t know yet how to use these tools read up about each one and set up accounts.

I’d concentrate on creating the compelling content that my site visitors enjoy and that is search engines friendly, and Building inbound links is important. Also email marketing - if you have an email list you can quickly reach a targeted audience with your message. Or else simply embedding the tell-a-friend in the product toolbar will enable users to spread the word easily.

I would think blogging for money–which is different from blogging–has four components
    1. Content
    2. Consistency
    3. Authority
    4 Products
Content is what goes into your blog. It is best if the content is related to the theme of your blog. This theme is indicated by you in the header of your blog. The theme can be broad but not so broad that your blog lacks focus. Content has to be both unique (not duplicate, copied from other sites) and high quality (can be written simply but must say something new and be useful to readers, both existing ones and new ones, who surf the Internet. .

Consistency is primarily for the search engines. They need to know you are both genuine (you prove that with the quality of your content) and regular. When you write or update your blog content regularly, the search engines come to your site regularly looking for new content. And every time they find some new content, they index and rank it. The more unique content you add the more chances you have of getting your website discovered. Interestingly, it is not enough to post content to your web. You must also bookmark it so that its presence is documented on as many platforms as is possible. That way you create waves about your website and everybody wants to know what it is about. It seems you are doing this at the moment through Twitter but you could also use Delicious, Diggs etc.

Authority is about letting the search engines know you are an authority on the subject you write. For this, you have to post opinions on many sites/forums. These comments have to be good otherwise, site-owners will not keep it on their site. (Try and Google "follow" and "nofollow" links. For authority, only the follow links carry weight, but nofollow links also have their own value).

Finally products. You seem to be starting first with products but even if your goal is to sell products, I would suggest you build a broad-based blog first (by broad-based, I mean your blog should have two three articles on several categories. For eg, if you are writing on golf, the categories would be golf field, golf balls, golf caps, golf clubs, golf tips etc)

And lastly a word of caution. The search engines don’t like marketing/affiliate sites. The trick thus is to create marketing sites which look like content sites to the search engines.
